4. Playing House in Provence: How Two Americans Became a Little Bit French

Description

Author Mary-Lou Weisman and her husband, Larry, didnt want to tour a foreign country; they wanted to become part of it. They were eager to pierce the tourist veil, and get as close to the essence of the culture as they could. No more observing from the outside with their noses pressed to the glass. They yearned for someone to open the door and invite them to step right in and make themselves at home. They wanted to become so French that even Americans wouldnt like them.

In September of 2003, the Weismans arrived in Provence, France, for the first of four, monthlong stays.Playing House in Provencefollows them on their sometimes wonderful, sometimes humiliating, always playful pursuit, as they learn that feeling disoriented and stupid on a daily basis can be fun. So can looking up French words they need to ask for directionso est la pharmacieonly to realize theres pas une chance they will understand the answer.

Funnier, smarter, and more wickedly honest than any memoir about Provence.

5. Paul Gauguin & the Marquesas

Description

While the work Gauguin produced in Tahiti has been extensively catalogued and analyzed over the past century, his last years in Atuona on the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas have received only glancing attention. The art and writing from this period nonetheless show a deep engagement with questions of traditional Marquesan beliefs, colonial and church authority and changing definitions of "exotic". Caroline Boyle-Turner focuses on the challenges Gauguin faced to intercede, invent, interpret or even ignore these complicated and often conflicting issues as he developed a powerful and poetic body of art. Paul Gauguin and the Marquesas: Paradise Found? is based on detailed research that focuses on the writings and the works of Gauguin himself. His letters and especially his book Avant et aprs are quoted extensively - what better voice is there to understand his art than his own words? Yet Gauguin worked hard to create a not always accurate myth of himself as both a poet and a savage. The author of this book untangles some of these myths by burrowing into colonial records in France, the Muse de Tahiti et des les and the Socit des tudes Ocaniennes (both in Papeete) as well as the resources of the Muse du quai Branly, Muse d'Orsay Documentation Center, the Bibliothque Nationale and the Service Protestant de Mission DEFAP in Paris. The author's discussions with Gauguin's Marquesan descendants, archeologists, anthropologists, botanists and historians who specialize in South Pacific studies broaden the understanding of Gauguin's surroundings, both real and imagined.

6. Haute Bohemians

Description

Who, exactly, is a haute bohemian? Leave it to the discriminating, gimlet eye of photographer Miguel Flores-Vianna, who enjoys an international, cult-like following. He has journeyed through four continents to capture an extraordinary group of fashion designers, landscape architects, artists and art historians, potters, and interior designers, where they livecountry cottages, beach bungalows, canal-side lofts, and East Village apartments, as well as assorted estancias, chteaux, and palazzi. Some of these spaces are grand, others are modest, but all are original, stylish, charming, and above all authentic, in the sense that they reflect their owners care and taste.

His work is introduced by Amy Astley, editor of AD.
